The war in six words recounted the horror of war, alienation in a hostile and difficult country, through six words, as if it were a poem.
This is the idea that Larry Smith, founder of American cultural magazine in 2006 along with Smith Tim Berkow, had to tell its readers the experience of thousands of U.S. soldiers sent to Afghanistan and Iraq.
A more effective way of documentary, geopolitical analysis, reports on post-war syndrome, which afflicts soldiers when they return home, judging from the enthusiastic comments of critics and the accession of the people involved.
"Six-word memoirs," in fact, is an editorial project conceived in 2008 by Smith magazine to collect the history of each, because "everyone has a story," reads the website of the magazine. There are "memoirs" about adolescence, love, society American, the 2010, art, food, ecology and life in the digital age.
In common, all anthologies are being created by "famous and obscure writers," reads the slogan of Larry Smith.
But the project "Six-word memoirs" as applied to conflicts in the Middle East quickly became a different thickness, less light-hearted and more introspective.
Smith cares about the war argument, which he has devoted a graphic novel, "Shooting War", set in 2011 in full out war against terrorism.
After years of tried and tested partnership with NGOs active in combating alcoholism, depression, dependence by drugs, Smith decided to cooperate with the American Association for veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq (IAVA) and made available on its website a "wall".
That's where the veterans can write what they want, in total anonymity. Here are some of the most recent post: "Sand, earth, sacrifice, stories of suffering," "War, only the tools have changed," "When the nightmares cease?", "Won the war physically, mentally I'm still fighting that," "All around illusions, make them stop," "proud member of a brotherhood unfortunate."
A first edition of "The war in six words" è stata già pubblicata, ma si prevedono aggiornamenti e riedizioni.
