AUSTRIA: guinea pig-BURIED BY SNOW, TEST STOPPED / ANSA
(ANSA) - BOLZANO, JANUARY 15 - Shortly after I started, and after that the television pictures of pigs dying in the snow had made the tour of Austria, have been interrupted, even for the animal rights controversy, some expressing conducted in Austria for a test of the avalanche with live pigs, which died in Vent Oetztal in the valley. The experiments on the possibility 'of survival under avalanches were conducted by an international team of scientists under the leadership of the University Clinic in Innsbruck anesthesia, in collaboration with the European Academy EURAC in Bolzano where there is a center for Emergency Medicine founded in the mountains just a few months ago. As you said in a statement circulated to leaders of Bolzano, the experiments were terminated''as their regular conduct could no longer 'be assured,''given the external pressures. In essence, the animal had risen, not only in Austria but also in Italy where the anti-vivisection league Lav had pointed out that experiments of this kind, at least in Italy would be illegal. The experiment would last a couple of weeks, but within minutes of reporting the news had come from Austria as a protest from South Tyrol. Leaders reaffirmed the scientific importance of their work, face - underlined - to improve the chances' of survival of people who were eventually swept away by avalanches. The research team consists of researchers from Austria (University 'of Medicine in Innsbruck) Germany (Charite 'Berlin), Norway (Universita' di Tromsoe), Alto Adige (European Academy of Bolzano) and collaborations with the U.S. (Mayo Clinic, Rochester) has now expressed its regret''for the lack of attention paid to the importance medical and scientific experiment.'' ''During the past eight years, we have carefully weighed the benefits that medical research would have drawn from the study with the suffering imposed on guinea pigs,''said the authors of the study, Hermann Brugger and Peter Paal. Benefits that would have resulted in reduction of mortality rate 'with improved therapies and the development of new equipment.''(ANSA).

Slavin, stop the test with drugged pigs
BOLZANO. Live pigs used in an experiment on deaths caused by avalanches. The test was scheduled on the Austrian side of the Ötztal and is edited by the faculty of medicine in Innsbruck and the Institute for Emergency Medicine in the mountains EURAC, directed by Hermann Brugger. The news, released yesterday, triggered the reaction of the Greens in South Tyrol and Lav, who have harshly criticized the use of experimental animals (29 pigs destined to die in the snow) for the experiment at high altitude. In the late afternoon yesterday, the chairman of the Tyrol, Anton Steixner, decided, in agreement with the Ministry of Research, to block the test. The same Steixner said that the experiment is "morally questionable". 'It is a cruel and macabre experiment, which is now suspended - have said the Greens - among other things, the scientific community was raised a doubt about the usefulness of data from such tests can be derived. And 'is significant that even the mountain rescue in the Tyrol has distanced himself from this experiment. " "I'm clear to all, with the exception of the researchers involved, the obvious and necessary ethical implications related to the experiment: the approach to methodology, however, nineteenth-century and misleading - says Michael Kuan, head Lav sector Vivisection - the anatomy and physiology of the pig, in fact, are different from our own species, other parameters such as thickness of skin, fat and lean mass ratio, frequency of heartbeat. " "The 29 selected pigs for the experiment were housed in a stable officially certified and approved by an international commission of experts - Brugger replied before he got to the stop test - the day of start of the experiment, animals are given a dose of narcotic and until their deaths do not perceive anything of your surroundings. The load on the animals - he continues - is then reduced to a minimum and well below the traditional methods of slaughter. Given the large number of victims that the avalanches in the Alps and Europe, the international project aims to intervene more effectively to save lives. Since it is not possible to simulate in the laboratory air pressure that occurs at high altitudes, the reproduction of the avalanche provides a valuable answer on how to intervene with patients - Brugger says - none of us would accept researchers to perform an experiment of this type, if was not convinced of its usefulness, "he said.

SUSPENDED EXPERIMENTS ON PIGS IN THE SNOW. E: ONLY THE FIRST STEP. STATE OR PROVINCE OF BOLZANO FINANCING EURAC?
After the strong contrary position taken by the LAV, along with Austrian animal rights organizations, politicians and public opinion, the experiments that included the use of 29 pigs were buried alive in snow to investigate the effects of freezing and death under conditions like humans, have been suspended.
The encouraging news, however, must be only the first step towards the complete annulment of the procedure, considered scientifically and ethically wrong.
LAV then asked the Health Ministry and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano if the EURAC Institute (emergency medicine in the mountains of Bolzano), the organization based in Italy involved in the trials in Austria, has received public funds to finance the project. If so, this would be an aggravating factor, even politically incorrect, given the clear legal position in force in the Province, which prohibits years vivisection.
" Today we read that the director of grounds that justify the experiment easy emotional involvement, as the chances of survival of victims di slavine, ma dal punto di vista scientifico il confronto tra anatomia e risposta alle condizioni esterne nei suini non è comparabile con quella umana.
Tale decreto è la trasposizione della Direttiva European Union, leaving at least surprised that Austria, also belonging to the Community, could make such experiments, given also the fact that, incredibly, the project was approved by the Ethics Committee also examined and Austrian . 01/15/2010
